JAMIE CHAN

Jamie obtained a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Design from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1998 and went on to study in NYC’s Columbia University where she received a Master of Architecture in 2001. Jamie currently holds the position of Senior Urban Designer in the Manhattan Borough Office, NYC Department of City Planning. She works on a range of large-scale planning and design projects across Manhattan, recently shifting to focus more on privately-owned public space designs. Her projects seek to revitalize neighborhoods through high quality open space designs. A majority are concentrated in Lower Manhattan: the East River Waterfront Esplanade, Water Street Corridor; World Trade Center’s public realm; Pier 42, NY Stock Exchange and South Street Seaport. The internationally recognized High Line Park is also a key component of her work portfolio. Jamie was awarded the German Chancellor Fellowship in 2003 by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. She also lectures at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation.

POLONCA LOVŠIN


KUD Obrat (Stefan Doepner, Urska Jurman, Polonca Lovsin, Apolonija Sustersic) is a non profit organisation of artists, architects and cultural activists based in Ljubljana. Their focus is production, research, presentation and education in the fields of contemporary visual art, technology based art, sound and architecture. Since their beginnings in 2006 they organise public discussions and events, make artistic interventions and write articles around issues of urban space politics and rights of the residents. They are striving for participatory processes in urban planning, they encourage self organised tactics and strategies and advocate for easier access of residents to temporary use of space in Ljubljana. In 2010 they started an initiative Beyond a Construction Site, a community garden and community space in degraded area in the center of Ljubljana.

Polonca Lovšin (1970) is an architect and artist based in Ljubljana. She recently completed her Ph.D. of Artistic research at Bauhaus University, Weimar, Germany (2015). In her work she focuses on self-organised initiatives and on alternative ways of living and working related to architecture, urban planning and environmental issues. She is exhibiting her work internationally on solo shows and group exhibitions. She was awarded several grants, awards and residencies. She is a co-founder and active member of KUD Obrat.

LIBURN ALIU

Liburn Aliu is the head of the Department of Planning, Construction and Environmental Protection at the Prishtina Municipality. For many years Liburn has worked as a practicing architect in numerous project planning and supervisions of different scales. He gained his Diploma in Architecture Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Prishtina University.

In latter years his work focused on built heritage and he worked on the restoration of numerous protected buildings. From January 2011 till December 2013, Mr.Aliu was an elected representative at the Kosovo Parliament of the Vetvendosje movement.

As part of the Committee for Agriculture, Forestry, Rural Development, Environment and Spatial Planning and the committee of Healthcare, Work and Social Welfare . Mr. Aliu was an active participant in drafting and amending of numerous laws that were adopted by the parliament (the Law on Construction, Spatial Planning, the Law on Illegal Construction, etc.)

Liburn Aliu është drejtor i Urbanizmit, Ndërtimit dhe Mbrojtjes së Mjedisit. Liburni ka punuar për vite të tëra si arkitekt në projektim dhe mbikqyrje të realizimit të projekteve të shumta ndërtimore qoftë ato të ndërtimit të lartë e poashtu në objekte të infrastrukturës. Studimet universitare për Arkitekturë i ka përfunduar në Fakulltetin e Ndërtimtarisë dhe Arkitekturës, Univerziteti i Prishtinës.

Viteve të fundit është marrë më tepër me trashëgiminë kulturore arkitektonike, si pjesë e projekteve të ndryshme të restaurimit të monumenteve të mbrojtura.

Nga janari i vitit 2011 deri në Dhjetor 2013, Z. Aliu ishte në funksionin e deputetit të zgjedhur në Kuvendin e Republikës së Kosovës, si pjesë e Grupit Parlamentar të Lëvizjes Vetëvendosje!

Si nënkryetar i Komisionit Parlamentar për Bujqësi, Pylltari, Zhvillim rural, Mjedis dhe Planifikim Hapësinor si dhe anëtar i atij për Shëndetësi, Punë dhe Mirëqenie Sociale, Z. Aliu ka marrë pjesë aktive në trajtimin dhe amendamentimin e ligjeve të shumta që trajtoi Kuvendi gjatë këtij legjislacioni (Ligjin e Ndërtimit, Planifikimit Hapësinor, Trajtimit të ndërtimeve pa leje, Kadastrit, etj.

DANIEL COSENTINO

Daniel Cosentino (b.1974 – NJ, USA) is a multimedia artist and faculty at the RIT/A.U.K (American University in Kosovo) via the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Global Programs. Cosentino draws upon his interest in Philosophy in making artworks that incorporate performance, sculpture, video, design and imaging. Cosentino holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Rutgers University and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography/Imaging Arts from RIT. In recent years Cosentino has worked with collaborators in Kosovo, Serbia, Italy, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Egypt and the United States to produce several exhibitions and symposiums.

Community Design Prishtina (CDP) at RIT/A.U.K is a symposium, an exhibition and a charrette exercise in the Dodona Neighborhood, exploring the “Community Design” model and Prishtina’s built environment, 6 – 9 May 2015 with major funding by the American Embassy in Kosovo. The CDP at RIT/A.U.K serves as a catalyst for a citizen-engaged model of development for the built environment of Prishtina, in Kosovo and its municipalities. The CDP at RIT/A.U.K aims to develop a “Community Design Center” in Prishtina dedicated to the provision of planning, design and development services by working directly with citizen and neighborhood groups and organizations for the betterment of Prishtina’s built environment.

KLODETA KRASNIQI

Klodeta is a spatial planner, with a bachelor’s degree in Architecture at the University of Prishtina, Kosovo and a master’s degree in Urban Planning and Policy Design at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. She is a PhD candidate at the Technical University of Vienna, Austria with the research topic on “Ethnicities in Space; Reshaping boundaries in Ex-Yugoslavian post-conflict countries”, which looks at crucial issues with regard to interethnic relations in the Balkan region from the spatial planning perspective.

Since 2012, she has been working in UN-Habitat Kosovo, in support of Kosovo municipalities for making better cities together with the community.

UN-Habitat Kosovo

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat is the United Nations programme with the mandate to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities.
In Kosovo, since 1999, UN-Habitat has been promoting good governance, security of tenure, sustainable human settlements development and inclusive spatial planning in Kosovo and the broader region.
During the last decade, through the Municipal Spatial Planning Programme (MuSPP) financed by the Swedish Development Cooperation, UN-Habitat has been providing support to Kosovo institutions and the civil society in the process of state-building, with regards to addressing emerging challenges associated to territorial and environmental planning and management alongside strengthening local democracy and legislative reforms.

JOSE MATEUS

Born in Castelo Branco in 1963, has graduated in Architecture from the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (FAUTL) in 1986.Together with Nuno Mateus, founded in 1991 ARX Portugal Arquitectos.Currently President of the Director’s Board of Lisbon Architecture Triennale, was also Executive Director of the events Trienal 2007 and Trienal 2010.Currently a member of Babel’s Editorial Board.Was President of the Southern Regional Assembly of the Ordem Arquitectos, as well as Vice President of the Direction of the same Regional Section between 2005-2007.
Guest professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, he was teacher at the Escola Técnica Superior d’ Arquitectura of the Universitat Internacional da Catalunya (ESARQ-UIC), in Barcelona; at the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) and at the Escola Superior de Artes Decorativas de Lisboa (ESAD). Author/coordinator of the magazine Linha (Architecture, Design and Landscape) of the weekly newspaper Expresso. He was also author/coordinator of the two television series Tempo & Traço for SIC Notícias channel. He was a regular participant on the radio program Na Ordem do Dia on TSF.
Lecturer in several different countries such as Portugal, Spain, USA, Hungary, England, Brazil, Belgium and Italy. He took part of the jury of the Architecture Prize of São Paulo Biennial in 2003, Europan Spain 2007 and ArchiFad 2011.
In 1993, the work of ARX was shown on the Exhibition Realidade Real at CCB and took part in many others, namely Percurso/Útvonal — ARX Portugal (Budapest, 2000), Influx 0.1 (Fundação de Serralves, 2002), Contaminantes/Comunicantes (Lisboa, 2000) and Nara Triennial (1994). Together with Centro Regional de Sangue do Porto, it took part of the exhibition Architectura e Design del Portogallo 1998-2004 of Milan Triennial.

BARDHYL RAMA

Bardhyl Rama, Int’l Assoc AIA (1976), graduated from Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, University of Prishtina. Has been working for International organizations for over 15 years. In his studio, he has done a lot of designs to include: individual residential buildings, multistory apartment buildings, sport centers/swimming pools, war memorials, restaurants, small commercial buildings etc. He is member of several professional organizations: AIA-American Institute of Architects & AIA Europe Chapter, ASCE, NIBS, IAPMO, APWA, CIBSE YEPG (Steering Committee member – Eastern Europe Regional Officer). Participated in several AIA Conferences such as: Hamburg, Lyon, London, Paris, and Milan.

Currently serving as Eastern Europe Section Director for AIA Europe Chapter Board of Directors – coordinating events and activities promoting AIA and AIA Europe in Eastern section.

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) was founded in 1857. It is based in Washington, D.C. There are more than 85,000 members (licensed architects and associates). The AIA is governed by a Board of Directors. The AIA influences government practices that affect the practice of the profession. Sets the industry standard in forms and contracts used in the design and construction industry. Hosts the annual AIA National Convention. There are over 300 local and state Chapters.

AIA Continental Europe –The Chapter’s administrative HQs are in Paris. It was chartered by the Institute on 8 Feb 94. There are AIA, Int’l Assoc. AIA, and Assoc. AIA members. Sections of the Chapter: France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Licht., Northern Europe, Southern Europe and Eastern Europe. AIA Europe usually holds two annual conferences (holds: lectures, presentations, and site visits of the well-known architects’ projects)

SIR PETER COOK

Sir Peter Cook RA is one of the most renowned architects of our time. He was a founder of Archigram and was knighted in 2007 by the Queen for his services to architecture and teaching. He is also a Royal Academician and a Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic. His achievements with Archigram were recognised by the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2004, when the group was awarded the Royal Gold Medal. Sir Peter Cook studied at the renowned AA School of Architecture where he lectured for many years he later headed the Bartlett School of Architecture. Currently Sir Peter is a professor and a visiting lecturer at many prestigious architecture schools around the world.

Ai ka qenë i lidhur me këtë çmim që nga viti 1982, kur puna e tij e kishte sjellë në kontakte me arkitektë, ndërtimtarë dhe planifikues hapsinor në mbarë botën. Udhëton gjerësisht në vendet myslimane dhe ka organizuar e marrë pjesë në një numër të madh të seminareve dhe kollokuiumeve ndërkombëtare që kanë të bëjnë me ndërtimin e mjediseve bashkëkohore. Ka bashkëpunuar në një numër të madh të botimeve dhe ekspozitave në arkitekturë dhe ka qenë i përfshire në organizimin e punëtorive profesionale dhe konkurseve ndërkombëtare të arkitekturës. Është ligjerues në shumë vende dhe shpesh i ka rastisur te jetë anëtare jurie i shumë shkollave të arkitekturës në Evropë, Afrikë dhe Azi. Fusha kryesore e specializimit të Darakhshanit është arkitektura bashkëkohore e shoqërive myslimane ku puna e tij profesionale ka përfshirë projektimin dhe menaxhimin e ndërtimit të projekteve të mëdha publike dhe të projekteve infrastrukturore në Iran, si dhe projekte arkitektonike në Paris dhe Gjenevë.

Director of the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture

Farrokh Derakhshani is Director of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. He has been associated with the Award since 1982, where his work has brought him into contact with architects, builders, and planners throughout the world.  He travels extensively in Muslim countries, and has organised and participated in numerous international seminars and colloquia dealing with contemporary built environments. He has collaborated on a large variety of publications and exhibitions on architecture, and has been involved in organising professional workshops and international architectural competitions. He lectures widely and has served as a jury member at schools of architecture in Europe, Africa and Asia. Mr. Derakhshani’s main field of specialisation is the contemporary architecture of Muslim societies, and his professional work has included the design and construction management of large-scale public works and infrastructure projects in Iran, as well as architectural design in Paris and Geneva. He is trained as an architect at the National University of Iran and later continued his studies at the School of Architecture in Paris (UP1).

GEZIM PAÇARIZI

Born in 1964 in Kosovo, Gezim studied architecture in Prishtina and Geneva University where he graduated in 1993. Gezim is one of the few architects of the post war Kosovo that have managed to overcome the difficult situation of the Kosovo environment. The cornerstone of his aesthetic include simplicity of form, thoughtful space planning and a desire to reveal the nature of the material, all of which contrast with an environment that often defaults to chaos and banality.
Gezim currently heads his architecture studio based in Geneva PHARC and is the Curator to the Kosovo’s Pavilion at this years Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale.
