Hashim Sarkis, Dean of MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning, has been named curator of the Venice Biennale’s 17th International Architecture Exhibition, to be held in 2020.
“With Hashim Sarkis, La Biennale has provided itself with a Curator who is particularly aware of the topics and criticalities which the various contrasting realities of today’s society pose for our living space,” said Paolo Baratta, president of the Venice Biennale, in a prepared statement.
“The world is putting new challenges in front of architecture,” Sarkis says. “I look forward to working with participating architects from around the world to imagine together how we are going to rise to these challenges. Thank you President Baratta and the Venice Biennale team for providing architecture this important platform. I am both honored and humbled.”
Sarkis received his BA in architecture and in fine arts from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1987, and his MA and PhD from Harvard University, in 1989 and 1995, respectively. He was a professor at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design from 1998 until January 2015, when he joined MIT.
As an architectural practitioner, Sarkis also runs Hashim Sarkis Studios and has designed a wide variety of structures — including government buildings, schools, and residences — on multiple continents. An apartment building Sarkis designed in Tyre, Lebanon, has been named as one of the most significant buildings of the 21st century by “The Phaidon Atlas of 21st Century World Architecture.”
Sarkis has also written widely about modern architecture and urban design. His publications include the book “Circa 1958: Lebanon in the Pictures and Plans of Constantinos Doxiadis,” and the edited volumes “CASE: Le Corbusier’s Venice Hospital” and “Josep Lluis Sert: The Architect of Urban Design” (co-edited with Eric Mumford).
The International Architecture Exhibition will run from May through November of 2020.
Hashim was a keynote speaker at the Kosovo Architecture Festival in 2017.

The Future Architecture platform is a pan-European exchange and networking platform for architecture. It promotes cooperation between professionals and architectural institutions in order to bring ideas related to the future of cities and architecture to the forefront of the architectural discourse and closer to a wider public.

Born 1990 in Italy, Jessica is an artist fascinated by build environment, technology and the use of space which reflects on contemporary behaviors of everyday life.
Graduated at the Design Academy of Eindhoven with an environmental art installation and a spatial design research, she hold an MA in Photography from the Royal Academy of Fine Art of Antwerp. Her Multi-disciplinary practice comes from a systematic process of investigation, with a spirit for intuitive experimentation as a means of expression.
She has been working in the creative fields for international studios as Studio Zimoun (CH), The Metropolitan Art Centre (UK), at STRP Festival (NL) and many others, creating innovative storytelling concepts and immersive projects for the public sphere. As young artists, she exhibited at Dutch Design Week, Milano Design Week, Florence Light, Athens Photo Festival, among others. Her work can be seen in the permanent collection of the Benaki Museum Athens and Centre for Artists´ Publications in Bremen.
Part of her current project: ELECTRIC SUN, has been exhibited during Equilibrio Sottile in Fotografica 2018 ITA; at the European Month Of Photography Berlin 2018, and in different locations in Antwerp.
Jessica works between Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy.

A furniture design graduate, Marcus began his journalism career writing for publications including Blueprint, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday and Conde Nast Traveller. He launched icon, the international architecture and design magazine, in 2003, and edited the publication until November 2006.
Under Marcus, the magazine rapidly established itself as one of the world’s most influential and respected design journals, winning a string of awards including Launch of the Year and Designer of the Year in 2003 and Monthly Magazine of the Year in 2005 and 2006. Marcus himself has won numerous awards, including Journalist of the Year (2002) and Architectural Journalist of the Year (2004). He won a BSME award for Best Brand-Building Initiative in 2005.
He also regularly appears on radio and TV, writing and presenting a documentary about French designer Philippe Starck for the BBC in 2003 and appearing in the major BBC series Home in 2006. An accomplished public speaker, Marcus has spoken at conferences in London, Tokyo, New York, Stockholm and Cape Town, among others.
As founder and editor-in-chief of Dezeen, Marcus has won awards including the BSME’s Business Editor of the Year in 2013. In the same year he was named one of the 100 most influential figures in the UK creative industries by the Hospital Club. Robert Potokar was born in 1965, and he graduated from the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture in 1990.
He leads the architectural office Ravnikar Potokar, which he founded with Vojteh Ravnikar. The two architects collaborated for many years, co-designing major projects and competition entries. More than 40 of their competition entries were awarded prizes, with 12 receiving first prize. Their most prominent joint realised works include: the Mandrač commercial-residential complex in Koper, the France BevkPublic Libraryin Nova Gorica, the Bled Business School, the Brinje Primary School in Grosuplje, the Masarykova F1 and F2 office buildings in Ljubljana, Residential Tower C in Majske poljane in Nova Gorica and numerous others.
In collaboration with other co-designers, Robert Potokar has received a further eleven first prizes in public competitions and has realised numerous projects, including: the renovation of Kinodvor and the renovation of Kinoteka Hallin Ljubljana,theTrnovo Centre for the Elderly in Ljubljana,the Hodoš Centre for the Elderly, the Home for the Elderly in Idrija, elementary schools in Kamnik and Litija, swimming pool Kolezija in Ljubljana, buildings in nature reserve Škocjanski zatok, renovations of public spaces in Škofja Loka and Ajdovščina and numerous single-family houses.
Together with colleagues he also received several awards and prizes, among them:
Piranesi Award in 1998 and 2004, The Golden Pen award of the Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia in 2007, 2008 and 2015 and the First Prize for best urban space on international Salon of architecture in Novi Sad, Serbia, 2018.
In 2002 he published a book An architecture guide to Gorenjska in collaboration with Špela Kuhar and Blaž Budja, for which he received a Plečnik medal. In 2008 he published an architecture guide Lets see the city Ljubljana together with Špela Kuhar, the guide was selected as the best designed Slovenian book of 2008.
For more than two decades, he has co-created the central European architectural journal Piranesi, and for the last eight years, he has been its chief editor.
In 2015, he earned the title of assistant professor at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture, where he works as a guest lecturer since 2010.
Ravnikar Potokar architecture office
Architecture office Ravnikar Potokar d.o.o. was founded in 2003, by architects Vojteh Ravnikar and Robert Potokar. Before that, the office operated as a part of companies KARS d.o.o. Sežana and ARHE d.o.o. Ljubljana. In the last years, the office successfully works independently. The office is successfully led by Robert Potokar since September 2010 when Vojteh Ravnikar passed away.
The office specialises in architectural design, from exterior and interior design to urbanism. Cooperation with many experts enables the office to take on larger projects.
The office is based on Gregorčičeva ulica 9 in Ljubljana. The team that works with the head of the office consists of graduate architects with many years of experience: Tanja Košuta, Sabina Colnar, Staša Baranja, Ajdin Bajrović, Javier Carrera, Mateja Šetina, Matej Fornazarič,Jernej Borko, Anja Patekar, Tina Gradišer, Mina Gutović, Tadej Kavčič … A total of ten to twelve architects work in the office.

Dean Lah was born in 1971 in Maribor, Slovenia and graduated from the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture in 1998. In the same year he cofounded the architectural office Enota where he works as partner architect ever since.
For his work in Enota he received many architectural awards, his work has been presented on numerous exhibitions and published in professional and broad interest publications all over the world. Dean lectures at architectural schools, conferences and symposiums in Slovenia and abroad. Since 2016 he is teaching at Architectural Department of University of Maribor. With intention to promote the importance of architectural quality, he has been active as the member of several architectural award and architectural competitions juries, member of executive board of Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia, member of European Forum for Architectural policies, member of executive board of Architects Association of Ljubljana and some other formal and informal networks and events on architecture.

Céline Baumann is a French landscape architect based in Switzerland. She studied at the Akademie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam and the Ecole du Paysage de Versailles, completing a master of landscape architecture cum laude in 2010. She has collaborated with the offices Inside-Outside / Petra Blaisse in Amsterdam, atelier le balto and Topotek 1 in Berlin before to start her own studio in Basel.
Over the years, she has worked in a variety of contexts, reflecting her personal interest in international exchange and cross-cultural environments. She aims through an intersectional lens to create dynamic open spaces, informed by the interactive ecology between people and nature. This design work is complemented by a commitment to writing and research, allowing her to explore the collective value of nature and its impact on individuals.
Baumann is currently Future Architecture alumna from the European Union and Akademie Schloss Solitude fellow in Stuttgart. She is also the co-founder of the activist group Schwesterprojekt in Basel. Her work has been presented internationally in institutions including the Museum of Architecture and Design of Ljubljana (2019), the architecture gallery VI PER in Prague (2019), the Theater Festival Basel (2018), the International University Campus in Paris (2018), the LaBa EPFL in Basel (2018), and the University of Agricultural Science of Alnarp in Malmö (2016).
Apart from giving a lecture Celine will also conduct a one week workshop on public space in Prishtina.

Jeffrey Shumaker, AICP, Assoc. AIA, has been working at the intersection of architecture and city planning for more than twenty years, in both the public and private sectors, with a particular focus on the design and programming of the public realm. Most recently Jeffrey served as the Director of Urban Planning and Design for KPF, a global architecture and planning practice based in NYC, working on projects in China, Australia, Europe, and the Americas.
Before that, Jeffrey served as the Chief Urban Designer for NYC, joining the Department of City Planning (DCP) in 2007 under then Commissioner Amanda Burden and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. For almost ten years with DCP, Jeffrey worked to ensure a high level of design quality on public spaces across the city and helped shape plans for neighborhoods as diverse as Coney Island in Brooklyn, the west side of Manhattan, including the High Line, and Long Island City in Queens.
Prior to joining the city, Jeffrey garnered more than ten years of experience helping communities, architecture and planning firms, private and non-profit institutions, towns and cities create better places to live, work, study and play. Jeffrey maintains his consultancy, URBANscape, which he began in 2002.
Jeffrey holds dual Masters Degrees in Architecture, Planning and Urban Design from MIT and a Bachelor of Architecture with Honors from Syracuse University. He is the recipient of the Public Architect Award from AIANY and the Michael Weil Award from DCP, both recognizing excellence in urban design in the public realm. Jeffrey teaches and lectures frequently.

Brenda dhjetë vjetësh me DCP, Jeffrey punoi për të siguruar një nivel të lartë të cilësisë së projektimit në hapësira publike në të gjithë qytetin dhe ndihmoi në formulimin e planeve për lagjet e ndryshme si Coney Island në Brooklyn, anën perëndimore të Manhattan-it, duke përfshirë High Line dhe Long Island City në Queens.
Para se ti bashkohej Departamentit të Planifikimit në NYC, Jeffrey punoi për më shumë se dhjetë vite për të krijim ambienteve më të mira për të jetuar, punuar, studiuar dhe rekreuar në bashkpunim me komunitete, kompani të arkitekturës dhe planifikimit si dhe institucione private e ato jofitimprurëse.
Jeffrey udhëheq konsulencën e tij, URBANscape, që nga viti 2002. Ai ka dy diploma të Masterit në Arkitekturë, Planifikim dhe Dizajn Urban nga MIT dhe një Bachelor diplomë në Arkitekturë nga Universiteti Syracuse. Është fitues i çmimit Public Architect Award nga AIANY dhe çmimit Michael Weil nga DCP, të dyja duke si njohje për përsosmëri për dizajn urban në sferën publike.

The workshop consists of theoretical and practical knowledge exploring the City of Prishtina (20/80), with a focus on both aesthetic and spatial topics. Each day is divided into two parts: preparing for shooting, with spatial observations, location scouting, shooting tips and photo review. While the second part is the photo shooting itself; which will improve photographic and aesthetic skills, and it will help you formulate an analysis of the built environment. We will explore Prishtina as a playground of viewpoints, taking pictures around artificial lit places. From the center to the overlook site to the City. We will deal with topics related to spatial observation and to visual perception such as composition and color. But also with time, weather and location tools. Analyzing the many aspects that determine the choice of pictures.
Each participant is free to focus on a specific subject of interests. Eg. interaction between people-spaces-objects, sociological use of space, places/non-places, objects/buildings… Our background will be the lighting sources of Prishtina, such as infrastructure, domestic lightings, skyglow, advertising light boards. On the last day of the workshop, we will select and edit the best pictures, for a small presentation.
The aim of the workshop is to understand the dynamics of night photography in the urban landscape. The four days of exercises are meant for passionate of photography, spatial studies graduates and students, and from social science disciplines. Basic knowledge of photography not required, but familiarity with your own camera is much appreciated. We would like everyone to come with clear interests before the workshop starts. What do you want to map/ research/or photograph in the night of Prishtina?
Bring a digital camera (must have), also preferred are a notebook, tripod, a light torch, shutter release (or self-timer in camera), GPS/ paper maps/compass.

Punëtoria përbëhet nga eksplorimi i njohurive teorike dhe praktike për qytetin e Prishtinës (20/80), me fokus në temat estetike dhe hapësinore. Çdo ditë është e ndarë në dy pjesë: përgatitja për fotosesion, me vëzhgim hapësinor, këshilla të xhirimit dhe rishikim i fotografive. Ndërsa pjesa e dytë ka për qëllim vetë fotografimin; i cili do të përmirësojë aftësitë fotografike dhe estetike dhe do t’ju ndihmojë të formuloni një analizë të mjedisit të ndërtuar. Ne do ta ekspolorojmë Prishtinën me një pikëpamje si të një këndi lojrash, me fotosesione rreth vendeve me ndriçim artificial. Duke filluar nga qendra në zonën e daljes dhe në qytet. Do të merremi me tema që lidhen me vëzhgimin hapësinor dhe me perceptimin vizual siç është përbërja dhe ngjyra, por edhe me mjetet e kohës, të motit dhe të lokacionit, duke analizuar shumë aspekte që përcaktojnë zgjedhjen e fotografive.
Secili pjesëmarrës është i lirë të përqendrohet në një subjekt specifik të interesave, p.sh. ndërveprimi midis njerëzve-hapësirave-objekteve, përdorimit sociologjik të hapësirës, vendeve / jo-vendeve, objekteve / ndërtesave, etj. Sfondi do të jetë vetë burimi i ndriçimit të Prishtinës, siç janë infrastruktura, ndriçimi i brendshëm, qielli, dritareve e panove reklamuese, etj. Në ditën e fundit të punëtorisë do të përzgjedhen dhe modifikohen fotografitë më të mira, për një ekspozitë të vogël.
Qëllimi i punëtorisë është të kuptojmë dinamikën e fotografisë së natës në peizazhin urban. Punëtoria 4 ditësh është e planifikuar për adhuruesit e fotografisë, studentët dhe te diplomuarit e studimeve hapësinore e arkitekt si dhe ata nga disiplinat e shkencave shoqërore. Njohuri themelore e fotografisë nuk kërkohet, por njohja e aparatit është shumë e vlerësuar.

NYC Urban Design Principles
New York City is famous for some great public spaces, including the beloved Bryant Park, Central Park and now the High Line, to name just a few; but it has only recently discovered that it has a much more comprehensive public realm. Unlike cities in Europe, cities in America, including NYC, have until very recently viewed streets as places primarily for cars and private land primarily for private users. It was not until the Bloomberg administration, and its release of PlaNYCin 2007, that the city began to view itself differently, from the pedestrian point of view and as a city for people. Deriving public benefit from private development was now the primary challenge.
This workshop will share some lessons learned from the Bloomberg years, what worked, what didn’t and what can be applied to other cities around the world, including Prishtina. Focusing on Lakrishta, and the center, we will apply NYC’s urban design principles and protocol, including the sidewalk toolkit, to analyze one neighborhood in particular and come up with a variety of proposals to improve its public realm.
Requirements for participation are enthusiasm about the city and the built environment. Students and recent graduates from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design, as well as sociology, philosophy, or art are strongly encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to actively contribute to the workshop for its whole duration.

Parimet e Dizajnit Urban të NYC
Qyteti i Nju Jorkut është i famshëm për hapësira të mëdha publike, duke përfshirë Bryant Park, Central Park dhe tani High Line në mes tjerash; por kohëve te fundit ka zbuluar se ka një sferë shumë më të plotë publike. Ndryshe nga qytetet në Evropë, qytetet në Amerikë, përfshirë NYC, deri vonë kanë parë rrugët kryesisht zona për makina dhe toka për përdoruesit privatë. Me administrimin e Bloomberg-ut dhe lirimin e PlaNYC-it në vitin 2007, fillohet dukshëm të vërehen ndryshimet në qytet, nga këndvështrimi i këmbësorëve dhe si një qytet i popullit. Arritja e përfitimit publik nga zhvillimi privat ishte sfida kryesore.
Kjo punëtori do të ndajë me pjesëmarrësit disa mësime të përfituara nga vitet e Bloomberg-ut, çfarë funksionoi e çfarë jo, si dhe çka mund të aplikohet në qytete të tjera anembanë botës, duke përfshirë Prishtinën. Duke u përqëndruar në Lakrishte dhe në qendrën e qytetit, ne do të aplikojmë parimet dhe protokollin e projektimit urban të NYC, duke përfshirë veglën e trotuareve, për të analizuar në veçanti një lagje dhe për të krijuar një sërë propozimesh për të përmirësuar fushën e saj publike.
Kërkesat për pjesëmarrje janë entuziazëm rreth qytetit dhe mjedisit të ndërtuar. Studentët dhe të diplomuarit e rinj nga fushat e arkitekturës, arkitekturës së peizazhit, dizajnit urban, sociologjisë, filozofisë ose artit inkurajohen fuqishëm të aplikojnë. Pjesëmarrësit pritet të kontribuojnë në mënyrë aktive në punëtori për tërë kohëzgjatjen e saj.
