The Kosovo Architecture Foundation was pleased to host a group of ETH Professors, Students and Swiss Artists for a one-day study visit to Prishtina. The visit was part of the “Debalkanize. A journey to Macedonia & Kosovo” study program under the chair of Prof.Dr. Philip Ursprung.
The visitors, apart from touring the “late-modernistic” landmarks of the city of Prishtina such as the National Library, Ethnological Museum, Youth and Sports Center, the Brotherhood and Unity Monument, etc. Also met with some heads of some of the key cultural institutions in the capital city. A short architecture tour of the main historic monuments in Prishtina preceded the visit to the Stacioni – Center for Contemporary Arts where they met the with the Albert Heta and Vala Osmani who head this important independent arts institution. Later the group visited the National Gallery where the director and curator Erzen Shkololli presented the history and the work being done by the Gallery. The visitors had a lengthy tour of the National Library hosted by the director Mr. Tefik Mehmeti. visitors also toured the Youth and Sports Center and met with Besa Luci from the Kosovo 2.0 platform, Artist Alban Muja and art performance group “Have it”. The group concluded their study tour in Prishtina with a visit to newly established gallery”Lambda Lambda Lambda” where they had a talk with founders Katharina Schendl and Isabella Ritter.
The next 3 days the ETH study group visited a couple of cities in Macedonia where they were hosted by City Creative Networks’ founders Milan Dinevski and Damjan Kokolevski.
Architect Universidad Católica de Chile, principal of Alejandro Aravena Architects, established in 1994 and, since 2006, Executive Director of ELEMENTAL, a for profit company with social interest working in projects of infrastructure, transportation, public space and housing, partnering with Universidad Catolica de Chile and COPEC, Chilean Oil Company.

Board Member of the Holcim Foundation, Zurich, Switzerland, since 2013; Foundational Member of the Chilean Society of Public Policies; Leader of the Helsinki Design Lab for SITRA, the Finnish Innovation Fund for the Government of Finland to design a national strategy towards carbon neutrality; and Board Member of Espacio Público, an independant chilean research center created in 2012. He was one of the 100 personalities contributing to the G+20 Rio Global Summit in June 2012, and was one of the speakers of TED Global 2014 in Rio.
He was a Professor at Harvard University (between 2000 and 2005); and also taught at Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia (2005); Architectural Association in London (1999); and London School of Economics.
He has been holding the Elemental Copec Chair at Universidad Catolica de Chile since 2006.

Rok Oman graduated from the Ljubljana School of Architecture and London’s Architectural Association before establishing OFIS arhitekti with Spela Videcnik in 1996 after winning several prominent competitions, such as Maribor Football Stadium and Ljubljana City Museum. Many of their projects have been nominated for awards including the Mies van der Rohe award. In 2009 they received a Silver IOC/IAKS medal for their football stadium, in 2006 they received the European Grand Prix for Innovation Award, in 2005 their Villa Bled received an honorable mention at the Miami Biennale and in 2004 they were highly commended for their City Museum renovation and extension by the UK Architectural Review’s annual AR+D awards. In 2000 they won the prestigious “Young architect of the year” award in London, UK, to mention just a few of their achievements. Their major work includes many award winning social housing projects and public projects such as the Farewell chapel and the space wheel museum. Recently they also completed their first larger scale building for students in Paris, which was followed by the construction of the fc Bate stadium in Borisov, Belarus. Rok is currently a visiting professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Han Tümertekin is a practicing architect based in Istanbul. His work include projects primarily in Turkey, as well as in Netherlands, Japan, United Kingdom, France, China, Mongolia and Kenya.
Mr. Tümertekin was trained in architecture at Istanbul Technical University and graduated from the University of Istanbul. In addition to his built work, he has been teaching architecture since 1992 at several universities, such as; Harvard University Graduate School of Design; Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne; Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture, Paris. He is among the founders of the graduate programme in architecture at Bilgi University, Istanbul, where he still teaches.
Mr. Tümertekin’s work have been widely published in international architectural journals and a monograph of his work was published by Harvard University Press in 2006.
Recipient of several prizes of architecture, Tümertekin was presented a 2004 Aga Khan Award for Architecture for the B2 House. He served on the Aga Khan 2007 Master Jury and he is a member of the awards steering committee.

Architecture studio ANARCH (Astrit Nixha) and Curator/architect Katharina Schendl, in a 5 day workshop, will challenge your imagination in creating a multifunctional space that will accommodate great number of cultural and business activities. The workshop, which will be held at ANARCH studios starting from the 3rd of July, apart from the mentioned space, will also study and analyze the surrounding context where the space is located with a purpose of integrating the surrounding activities with those at the center.

A collaborative Research Workshop in Prishtina’s Sante
What is public space and what is happening with public spaces in Prishtina and Ljubljana? Analysing cities like Ljubljana and Prishtina, where public spaces are undergoing a transition from public ownership into private, is more about understanding what is private interest and public interest and how these two can function in collaboration and not always be in conflict with one another. With the dissolution of the state that had the full authority and administration over public spaces, the public space either remained neglected by the new state or the private initiative took over and not only maintained public spaces but in many cases used them for private interests.
Today’s trends and practices of architects and artists try to stimulate residents to actively participate into processes of urban planning and management of public spaces so they can have greater role in shaping and maintaining public spaces more in tune with their needs and visions.
The aim of this workshop is to map the existing situation and trigger communication with residents of an apartment block in Prishtina, in the urban dictionary known as Sante. Sante used to be one of the popular cafés that existed during 1990 in this area. This café no longer exists but the area is still known as Sante and is today a location of many cafés, At the same time it is also a big residential area in the centre of Prishtina.
Based on an experimental research and approach, in collaboration with the community, the workshop will analyse and explore the potentials of this area for socialization, interaction, children’s play [K1] and a new imagination.

Trendet dhe metodologjitë bashkëkohore të përdorura nga arkitektët dhe artistët mundohën ta stimulojnë pjesëmarrjën aktive të qytetarëve në procesin e planifikimin urban dhe menagjimin e hapësirave publike në atë mënyrë që ata ta ken një rol më të madh në modelimin dhe mirëmbajtjën e asaj hapësire duke ju përgjigjur kërkesave të tyre.
Qëllimi i puntorisë është të mapoj situatën egzistuese në bllokun banesor të njohur si te Santea. Sante ishte emri i një bari shumë të frekuentuar gjatë viteve 1990 që ndodhej në atë bllok. Ky bar nuk egziston më por zona në fjalë është e populluar me një numër të madh të bareve si dhe një kompleks i madh banesor.
Bazuar në hulumtimin dhe qasjën eksperimentale, në bashkëpunim me komunitetin, puntoria do analizoj dhe hulumtoj potencialin e zonës për socializim, bashkëveprim, lojë të fëmijëve dhe një imagjinim të ri.

For many years the Ulpiana Market served as a center of community interaction. In recent years due to the convenience of the many supermarkets opened in and around the Ulpiana neighborhood, the Market is losing its importance, vendors have started abandoning it and shopping there isn’t a pleasant experience as it used to be.
A 5 day intensive workshop will be exploring, creating new scenarios and raising questions on how can we revitalize the market, how can we incorporate arts and culture in the shopping experience and how can we make shopping at Ulpiana Market fun and enjoyable again.
The workshop will be led by Jamie Chan a senior urban designer at the New York City Planning Department, Alban Muja a local artist and the studio the Office of Urban Drafters + Architects.

The Office for Urban Regeneration was created from a collaboration between the Kosovo Architecture Foundation and Skye Duncan of the NYC Planning Department in 2014. OUR ran by KAF in the Prishtina Municipality premisses for 6 months and became part of the Prishtina City Urban Planning Department with a full time staff of 6 people. During the initial phase of the project more than 200 individuals, mainly recent graduates where part of accessibility mapping of 18 streets in central Prishtina.
The first draft project to be presented to the Municipal authorities was the “Deshmoret e Kombit” street which foresaw the complete regeneration of the street, starting with the sidewalk accessibility, providing adequate parking space for residents and quick stop parking, as well as the treatment of the facades and signage guideline.
The Office for Urban Regeneration also designed the guidelines for the first 100% accessible street in Prishtina. The “Garibaldi” street foresaw the easy access for wheelchairs, street guides for visually impaired as well as the facade and sidewalk commercial use guideline. OUR also initiated the spatial mapping of disabled citizens and easy to implement physical interventions that would enable them to visit the closest park, shop, bar, as well as schools.
In 2016 through the “Right to Social Housing and Public Space” project the Office extended its reach to other cities such as Fushe Kosova, Gjilan, Ferizaj and Gjakova. In each city the focus was on a particular underserved group of citizens. In Fushe Kosova the focus was on the Roma community and creation of recreational public spaces in the 28 and 29 Neighborhoods, implementing traffic calming measures around the primary and high schools in the city as well as closing up the Dardania street in the evenings and weekends for vehicle traffic.
In Ferizaj OUR-Ferizaj mapped the accessibility for all publicly owned buildings in the city as well as 8 streets in the center of the city. The same work was done in Gjakova and Gjilan as well, with a bigger focus on affordable and social housing schemes.

Haven’t you all, at least once, imagined a different or better city of Prishtina? Haven’t you ever thought of any tiny or big change that would ease and improve the way we use and experience our city? If you were given the power to change Prishtina, what would you do to make it safer, more beautiful, usable, livable and user-friendly? Well, here you have the chance to share your ideas and turn the city around! Someday, the Municipality of Prishtina might realize them!
Kosovo Architecture Foundation (KAF) and the Municipality of Prishtina are organizing this Design Contest “Ideas for Prishtina”, aiming to collect citizens’ proposals on shaping their living environments. Since the city of Prishtina is experiencing constant transformations, we want to focus on generating community-based designs and visions on improving or transforming public spaces and their neighborhoods. These proposals could vary from sidewalks, crossroads, city lights, billboards, building facades, storefronts, rooftops, passages, tunnels, parks and other green areas, fountains, squares, markets, information points, pavilions, new public buildings, or even utopic urban solutions.
Everyone, either being a devoted residents or just visitors in Prishtina, of any age, nationality, or professional background, are invited to share their ideas. You can participate in this Design Contest either individually or in groups with your friends, colleagues, neighbors, or family members. The scope of your proposed interventions may vary from small to utopic ones. You are totally free to express yourselves either by architectural and urban designs, or art works, photos, videos, texts, etc. All you need to do in your designs is specify the exact location of your proposed intervention, and explain how your idea would improve the city and help the citizens.
The Municipality of Prishtina will be awarding the best proposal will the Rexhep Luci Award that also includes a prize in money (1000 euros), while the most feasible projects might be realized by the Municipality.

1. Competition Promoters & Organizers
“Ideas for Prishtina” is organized by the Kosovo Architecture Foundation (KAF) and the Municipality of Prishina on behalf of Prishtina Architecture Week (PAW).
2. Aim of competition
The main idea for this competition is to stimulate the citizens on expressing their wishes and ideas towards the improvement of the city of Prishtina. It is an open and ideas only competition. The proposed ideas will be exhibited during PAW, and later will remain property of the Municipality of Prishtina for possible further developments.
3. Eligibility
This design contest is open for anyone, local of foreigner, student or professional, interested on improving the quality of Prishtina. Entrants might apply individually or in mixed groups.

5. Judging Panel & Process
The evaluation and selection of best design proposals will be conducted by a jury composed of national and international members. The jury is composed of: Asa Bruno, London; Skye Duncan, New York; Pippo Ciorra, Rome, Liburn Alia, Prishtina; Bekim Ramku, Prishtina. The judging process will take place beginning of September, and the winners’ announcement will be on 11th of September 2014.
6. Awards
All the proposals will be published in a catalog and exhibited by KAF. There will be given award certificates for the best 10 proposals, and the first prize will receive a prize in money (1000 euros). The most feasible proposals may later be realized by the Municipality of Prishtina.
7. Copyright
The intellectual property rights will remain to the competition participants. KAF does not hold responsibility for any plagiarism. KAF and the Municipality of Prishtina reserve the right to keep the entries for their publication, exhibition and other marketing activities, at no further compensation. If any of these designs will be realized by Municipality of Prishtina, there is no need to ask for further permission. In case any entry will be implemented and it is needed KAF and the Municipality of Prishtina hold the right to technically modify the entries.

Meqë qyteti i Prishtinës është duke përjetuar transformime të vazhdueshme, ne dëshirojmë të përqendrohemi në gjenerimin e dizajneve dhe vizioneve nga komuniteti për përmirësimin ose transformimin e hapësirave publike dhe lagjeve të tyre. Këto propozime mund të variojnë nga trotuaret, udhëkryqet, mjetet ndriçuese, reklamat, pasazhet, tunelet, shatërvanët, sheshet, tregjet, parqet dhe hapësirat tjera të gjelbra, fasadat e kulmet e ndërtesave, përdheset e dyqaneve, pikat informuese, pavijonet, ndërtesat e reja publike, e deri në zgjidhje utopike.
Çdokush, qofshin banorë besnik apo vetëm vizitorë të Prishtinës, të çfarëdo moshe, nacionaliteti, apo prapavije profesionale, janë të ftuar të ndajnë idetë e tyre. Ju mund të merrni pjesë në konkurs individualisht ose në grupe me shokët, kolegët, fqinjët apo familjarët tuaj. Intervenimet tuaja të propozuara mund të variojnë nga ato më të voglat e deri në ato më utopike. Ju jeni të lirë të paraqitni idetë tuaja qoftë me dizajne arkitekturale apo urbane, ose edhe me vepra artistike, fotografi, tekste etj. Kejt cka duhet të bëni në dizajnin tuaj është taspecifikoni lokacionin e propozimit tuaj dhe shpjegoni se si ideja juaj do përmirsonte qytetin dhe ndihmoj qytetarët.
Propozimi më i mirë do të shpërblehet me çmimin e parë Rexhep Luci dhe do pranoj shperblim financiar (1000 euro), ndërsa projektet e zbatueshme do mund të realizohen nga Komuna e Prishtinës.

TERMAT DHE KUSHTET E KONKURSIT
1. Organizatorët dhe përkrahësit e konkursit
“Ide për Prishtinën” organizohet nga Kosovo Architecture Foundation (KAF) dhe Komuna e Prishtinës gjatë Javës së Arkitekturës në Prishtinë (PAW).
2. Qëllimi i konkursit
Qëllimi i konkursit është stimulimi i qytetarëve në shprehjen e dëshirave dhe ideve të tyre për përmirësimin e qytetit të Prishtinës. Ky konkurs është i hapur dhe vetëm ideor. Idetë e propozuara do të ekspozohen gjatë Javës së Arkitekturës në Prishtinë, ndërsa më vonë do të mbeten pronë e Komunës së Prishtinës për zhvillime të mëtutjeshme.
3. Kushtet për aplikim
Ky konkurs është i hapur për të gjithë, qytetarë lokal apo të huaj, studentë apo profesionistë, të interesuar në përmirësimin e kualitetit të Prishtinës. Aplikuesit mund të marrin pjesë individualisht apo në grupe të përziera.

5. Kërkesat për aplikim
Për këtë konkurs nuk janë specifikuar kërkesa të veçanta për aplikim, andaj jeni të lirë të përdorni çfarëdo teknike të prezantimit për të shprehur idetë e juaja. Në dizajnet tuaja ju duhet të specifikoni lokacionin e saktë të intervenimit të propozuar, si dhe të shpjegoni se si ideja juaj do të përmirësojë qytetin dhe do të ndihmojë qytetarët.
6. Juria dhe procesi i vlerësimit
Vlerësimi dhe përzgjedhja e dizajneve më të mira do të bëhet nga një juri e përbërë nga anëtarë vendorë dhe ndërkombëtarë. Anëtarët e jurisë janë: Asa Bruno, Londer; Skye Duncan, Nju Jork, Pippo Ciorra, Romë, Liburn Alia, Prishtinë, Bekim Ramku, Prishtinë. Vlerësimi do të bëhet në fillim të muajit Shtator ndërsa fituesit do të shpallen më 11 Shtator 2014.
7. Çmimet
Ndër to do të ketë një çmim të parë dhe dhjetë çmime të tjera të dalluara. Dizajni më i mirë do të shpërblehet me një vlerë prej 1000 eurove, ndërsa dhjetë propozimet tjera më të mira do të marrin mirënjohje. Propozimet më të realizueshme mund të zbatohen nga Komuna e Prishtinës. Të gjitha propozimet do të publikohen në katalogun dhe do ekspozohen nga KAF-i.
8. Të drejtat autoriale
Të drejtat e dizajnit konceptual do të mbesin tek pjesëmarrësit e konkursit. Megjithatë, në rast se ndonjë nga propozimet zbatohet, KAF dhe Komuna e Prishtinës kanë të drejtën për modifikimin teknik të tyre pa kërkuar autorizime të tjera nga autorët. Gjithashtu ata mund të publikojnë, ekspozojnë dhe përdorin propozimet për aktivitete të marketingut pa ndonjë kompensim. KAF nuk mban përgjegjësi për asnjë plagjiaturë.
