Joni Baboci is an architect, planner and all-around urban enthusiast. He is the founder of Layer (https://getlayer.xyz), a spatial orchestration platform with global data coverage which empowers teams to govern through tactics and patterns while leveraging machine learning and artificial intelligence. He has previously served as the General Director of Planning and Urban Development for the City of Tirana and the director of Atelier Albania, a structure of the Albanian government dealing with national and regional strategic planning; Joni has executed planning, design & development projects at different scales at the national, regional and local levels. He consults on urbanism and planning for various cultural and multilateral institutions. Joni holds a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science degree in Cities from the London School of Economics. Since 1999 raumlaborberlin works in various interdisciplinary teams on urban design, architecture, experimental building and research. Today’s partners are Francesco Apuzzo, Markus Bader, Benjamin Foerster-Baldenius, Frauke Gerstenberg, Andrea Hofmann, Jan Liesegang, Christof Mayer, Florian Stirnemann, Axel Timm.
Jan Liesegang was born in Cologne 1968, he studied Architecture in Berlin, Copenhagen and at the Cooper Union School of Architecture, New York. After graduating in Berlin he worked for 3 years as project architect for Sauerbruch Hutton Architects, Berlin. In 1999 he co-founded raumlaborberlin. Today raumlabor works worldwide on contemporary architecture, urbanism, art and research. From 2001-07 he has been teaching architecture and urban planning at the Art Academy, Stuttgart. In 2010 he was awarded with a one-year research scholarship for the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome. 2014/16 he taught master classes at the Bergen School of Architecture. Since 2017 he is professor for architecture at the Bergen School of Architecture. In 2015 he co published the book “building the city together” on experimental architecture and new self-organised public spaces.

Trained as art and architecture historian at University of Augsburg he received a research fellowship 1986-1989 at Bibliotheca Hertziana (Max-Planck-Institut) in Rome for his dissertation about Architecture Models in the Renaissance. In 1994 he started as curatorial assistant at Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin, from 1996 to 2007 working as curator and head of architecture collection of Kunstbibliothek, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as Curator at the Architecture and Design Department of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2011/12 he was Loeb-Fellow at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Since 2012 he is Professor for Architecture History and Curatorial Studies at Faculty for Architecture at Technical University Munich (TUM) and Director of Architecture Museum of TUM.
As curator he organized numerous architecture exhibitions in Berlin, New York, Munich. In Berlin he initiated a series of large-scale architecture exhibitions in Mies van der Rohe’s Neue Nationalgalerie, starting with “Renzo Piano. Architekturen des Lebens” (2000), followed by „Content / Rem Koolhaas und OMA/AMO“ (2003). He also worked on „Mies in Berlin“ (co-organized with The Museum of Modern Art, New York) presented in 2001-2002 in Altes Museum in Berlin. At MoMA he presented in 2010 the exhibition „Small Scale, Big Change. New Architectures of Social Engagement“, which was transformed in a traveling exhibition with the title “Think Global, Build Social!”, presented at DAM, Frankfurt am Main and AzW, Wien (2013). As a touring exhibition of Goethe-Institut it was presented from 2014-2018 in more than 30 venues all over the world.
In his current position at TUM he organized more than 30 exhibitions and edited or co-edited the related catalogs and publications. The focus of his research and curatorial work is on using exhibitions as a critical platform and to investigate the social relevance of architecture.

Hussam Dakkak is an architect based in London. He is a partner at Studio Bound and has served as the program director of the AA Jeddah Visiting School since 2015. Hussam is an ARB registered architect holding a master’s in architecture from the Architectural Association in London. Hussam currently serves as a design and development lead for Rassmal. Hussam also serves as a consultant on a number of cultural and architectural projects with PIF and sits on the advisory board for the Royal Commission of Makkah. Hussam has lectured at LSE, Harvard University, the AA and continues his research and design work with Studio Bound, and in 2021 were the architects appointed to represent Saudi Arabia at the Venice Biennale.

Niko McGlashan is a researcher and educator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, within the Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism in the School of Architecture and Planning. At the Center, he designs and develops toolkits for architects, planners, and designers to leverage data and computation in novel ways. His research crosses a myriad of scales and mediums; be it physical or ‘phygital’ architecture, real-time GIS through web design, digital fabrication, and a suite of UX/UI applications. For his Master of Architecture thesis at the University of Toronto, Niko designed a multiplayer video game that reflected on the often overlooked intersection of virtual space, worldbuilding, and contemporary media culture. His work ranges from built form, virtual spaces, data analysis, fabrication, and interactive websites; working with notable institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Toronto, Aga Khan Foundation (AKAA), and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With a deep understanding of both physical and digital architecture, Niko is always looking for novel ways to intertwine and blur these two realities.

Project Leader and Architect, Leo Stuckardt (DE), coordinates MVRDV Next, an in-house R&D group he co-founded in 2017, that focuses on experimental technologies, computational workflows, and new forms of narrative. Orchestrating collaborations with MVRDV’s design studios and developing data-driven, parametric design workflows, he helps teams to implement new design methodologies in their work, to enhance design capabilities, reducing cost, enhancing sustainability, as well as the future impact of MVRDV’s work.
With his fascination for emerging tools, software, and new media, Stuckardt – a cinefile, and musician – contributes to architectural projects from Beijing, to Mumbia, and to Amsterdam, but sees MVRDV Next as his greatest professional achievement to date. It comes as no surprise that Stuckardt plays an integral role in the office’s research projects, teaching design studios and seminars with the Why Factory at TU Delft, and participating in research endeavours with external parties such as the Strelka Institute. Prior to joining MVRDV in 2014, Stuckardt worked for Rotterdam-based Russian office, Svesmi, and completed post-graduate studies at Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow.

Associate Kristina Knauf co-leads MVRDV’s climate group and is involved in the sustainability aspects in all of MVRDV’s projects. Before, she shaped MVRDV project processes for the Urban Studio from early acquisition stages to delivery, driving storyline, design, and the internal coordination of project development through different design phases. With a particular dedication to urbanism and resilience, Knauf champions the development of innovative methods, tools, and products that help to future-proof MVRDV’s office vision. Knauf has been integral to creating projects that provide new perspectives for future living on a larger scale, including assisting Founding Partner, Winy Maas, in the supervision of the development of Eindhoven city center, and Resilient by Design, MVRDV’s resilience research for the city of San Francisco as it faces the effects of climate change.
Prior to joining MVRDV, Knauf worked at award-winning Rotterdam office, KCAP, where she was integral to numerous impactful urban projects, including Park-City South in Cologne. This particular project involved an intense 1-year participatory design process with large public presentations, events, and political discussions. Knauf played a strong role in these to ensure that the masterplan incorporated stakeholder ideas. Outside of her work at MVRDV, Knauf maintains an active role in the architectural discipline, lecturing widely, including at the 2014 Venice Biennale and leveraging her skills and experience to great success. She was part of a winning team for Europan 14 and collaborated in workshops on the productive city with Drom and the City of Amsterdam.

Urban Data Kosovo project aims to build local capacity for planning agencies, municipal authorities, and planning and architecture schools in urban spatial analytics.
The scarce availability of spatial data in Kosovo hinders the country’s ability to plan and prepare for major urban challenges that will affect its cities and the country at- large. This project aims to train the next generation of architects and urban planners in contemporary spatial analytical tools, methods, and visualization, while also working with local stakeholders to identify urgent data needs. In dialogue with MIT’s Norman B. Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism, the Kosovo Architecture Foundation will use funding from a KUSA grant to begin conversations with and initial training for local officials, faculty, and students who can benefit from a rich understanding of these digital platforms.
This project aims to raise the academic capacity of local institutions of higher education, establish the new curriculum, build the capacity of the KSA, MESP and other relevant institutions as well as establish a long-term collaboration between MIT LCAU and KAF that will be working on producing the future cadre in this field. To tackle the missing data issue, this project will start from within the curriculum of architecture and planning schools, capitalizing on the enthusiasm of future generations of urban planners in Kosovo.
During the implementation of UDK the Kosovo team will be organizing several workshops with the aim of introducing new tools and methodologies in urban data analytics to local academic staff. While the extended project team which includes representatives of local architecture & planning schools, and a representative of the Kosovo Statistical Agency will be conducting a study visit to MIT LCAU during April 2022 where the LCAU team will host a workshop and a set of lectures.
This project is a collaborative effort between Kosovo Architecture Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Leventhal Center for Advanced Urbanism (LCAU). The LCAU is a research center within the School of Architecture and Planning (SA+P) committed to fostering a rigorous design culture for the large scale by focusing disciplinary conversations about architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, and systems thinking. The LCAU is motivated by the radical changes in our environment, and the role that design and research can play in addressing these.
This project is led by Sarah Williams, Norman B. & Muriel Leventhal Associate Professor of Advanced Urbanism Director and Director of Civic Data Design Lab and Bekim Ramku the Director of Kosovo Architecture Foundation and the Office for Urban Regeneration.
Kosovo Architecture Foundation is pleased to be a partner in the Manifesta 14 Western Balkans Project: Co-Producing Common Space and Shaping Formations of Solidarity in the Western Balkans and Beyond, co-funded by the European Union.
The International Foundation Manifesta, the initiator of Europe’s only nomadic cultural biennial and initiator of the Manifesta 14 Western Balkans Project, is collaborating with the City of Prishtina, Kosovo to develop Manifesta 14 Prishtina which will open its doors from the 22nd of July to the 30th of October 2022.
Organised for the occasion of the biennial, the International Foundation Manifesta has set up the Manifesta 14 Western Balkans Project which aims to enlarge the outreach and duration of the European Nomadic Biennial by developing a cross-regional collaborative platform including a vast array of cultural and civic activities across the region. An integral objective of the project is to open up the Western Balkan to create a project that breaks the confines of isolated cultural infrastructures and networks.
Liking architecture, urban planning, human rights, arts and culture, the Manifesta 14 Western Balkans Project proposes a plethora of diverse activities in 2021 and 2022 ranging from in-depth cultural research, expert talks and conferences to exhibitions and events across the region.
The partner network of the Manifesta Western Balkans Project promotes a politics of care between different communities in the Western Balkans and aims to stimulate broader cross-border network structures, where knowledge production and local expertise can thrive.
The activities in the development process will be the result of close collaborations between the International Foundation Manifesta, The Netherlands and nine partners from the Western Balkans: Kosovo Architecture Foundation (KAF); Post-Conflict Research Center Sarajevo (PCRC); RRITU (Termokiss) Prishtina; Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) Skopje; Quendra Harabel Tirana; APSS Institute Podgorica; NGO Aktiv Kosovo; Meydan D.O.O. (Hestia) Belgrade; Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Sofia; European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (ERIAC) Berlin.
The Manifesta 14 Western Balkans Project has been awarded a Creative Europe Western Balkans grant by the European Union.
